A Break From Social Media

Saturday, July 30, 2016

Sometime in June, I took a couple weeks off social media. I completely fell off the face of the Internet world and did not post anything on Instagram, Twitter or Snapchat– all platforms that I used daily. (I'll admit, I had to go on Facebook to watch cute dog videos! Can you blame me?)
My phone was ruining my way of life.

Besides being a fashion blogger, I actually have a real job outside of this– a social media manager. With these two jobs, I spend most of my time staring at a screen. All my tasks and duties involved my computer or my phone. And after awhile it got so unhealthy. I was constantly on my phone and would never put it down for a break. Whether I was eating, out with family/friends, or even watching TV– somehow I was ALSO doing something on my phone.

Besides using it to work, I of course constantly kept up to date with what everyone else was doing. I'd scroll through Instagram like it was my damn job. Scrolling, liking, commenting, gushing over other people's lives. I would watch every single Snapchat story. And I would refresh and refresh until something new popped up! I was so consumed in everyone's lives that I neglected my own.
So, do I hate social media/my phone? Of course not! It gave me the ability to do what I love and has blessed me with amazing friends and opportunities. Instagram and my blog will always be so important to me. They're beautiful platforms where I can express myself in the best way possible.

But I've realized that I need to step back from it all and give myself time to actually LIVE. To live through my own eyes and not through a screen. To actually BE in the moment instead of focusing on capturing it.
It's great to be connected with the world but sometimes we just need to pause. Put your phone down, experience life and spend time with your loved ones.

If you've read this far, thank you! I'm usually never personal on here so this was a nice change. Have you ever felt this way? Do you ever feel consumed in social media/your phone?

  1. I've just found your blog and I think you look stunning, and you have great style.I really like that dress too. I'll definitely keep an eye on it!
I find that I am a bit addicted to social media, I check Facebook and Instagram way too often and I don't even know what I'm expecting to find there really! I'm trying to slow down but it's become a habit of just taking my phone out of my bag and check without even thinking! I should go cold turkey too, and the holidays might be a good time for that.
